  10.       Yes, it works, and damn fast too!  However, there are a few bugs which
  11. need to be worked out.  In case you haven't heard, fastback backs up about 1.2
  12. megs a minute to 360K drives on a PC or compatible and about 2 megs a minute
  13. to 1.2 Meg drives on an AT or compatible. You can get it from Fifth Generation
  14. Systems, 800-228-6127.

  17. 1) With version 4.8 on a compaq, got a system lockup periodically and worse
  18.       yet, it screwed up the FAT on the hard disk.  Nothing I couldn't handle,
  19.       but I was sweating for a while.

  21. 2) A friend of mine was tring to back up a screwed-up hard disk on an IBM
  22.       portable (third-party of course) and when the hard disk fluked out,
  23.       fastback (5.0) wrote the remaining stuff to track 40 of the floppy
  24.       over and over again.  This error has been reported and probably cor-
  25.       rected already.  If you get a hard media error on the drive you're
  26.       backing up with 5.0, start over. (With the DOS backup command?)

  28. 3) Fifth Gen. never anticipated that the first backup you make might not be
  29.       a full one.  If it isn't, you must move the file fastback.cat from
  30.       \fastback on the hard disk (save it) in order to back up again.

  32. 4) They claim (probably correctly) that there is a problem with some of the
  33.       DMA chips out there--fix available in chip form from Fifth Gen. (cheap)
  34.  
  35. 5) Not really a bug but the prelim. manual doesn't cover it--5.0 uses a non-
  36.       DOS format (in addition to the non-DOS directory as in 4.8) so the
  37.       first time you use a batch of disks it will format them while backing
  38.       up.  You will NOT be able to read the disks without frestore!!

  40. 6) Frestore 5.0 doesn't tell me when the restore is finished.

  43. WHATEVER YOU DO, MAKE SURE YOU DO A COMPLETE FILE-BY-FILE COMPARE WITH
  44. FRESTORE BEFORE YOU FORMAT YOUR DISK OR ANYTHING RADICAL LIKE THAT.
  45. ALSO BEFORE YOU FORMAT, SAVE THE FILE \FASTBACK\FASTBACK.CAT (5.0) FOR A
  46. FASTER RESTORE AND CONTROL OVER THE FILES YOU WANT RESTORED!!!!!

  49. IN SPITE OF BUGS, THIS PRODUCT IS WONDERFUL AND I HAVE A COMPLETE BACKUP OF
  50. MY HARD DISK ALWAYS!! FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER.  THIS SUCKER IS FASTER THAN
  51. A STREAMER TAPE AND ABLE TO LEAP TALL BUILDINGS AT A SINGLE BOUND. I LOVE IT.
